General: Ready to Sail

Posted by Alex on 2008-03-29 12:42:27 CDT

The picture below was taken on March 29, 2008. As you can see, both the skiff and the HBI are at the dock, and down at the end Sonar #2 is rigged and ready to sail. Mark and a team of volunteers braved a hail storm to make this happen. We are ahead of schedule and ready for a great season. Come down and see us.

General: Executive Director to Move On

Posted by Alex on 2008-03-17 14:53:54 CDT

A note from our Executive Director, Ted Coates -

Dear Members and Friends of Piers Park Sailing Center;

In January, I submitted my resignation as Executive Director. While I am sad to leave, there is a very good reason. Many of you know that I remarried last spring. As part of starting a new life together, my wife and I want to move to somewhere new.

I do not expect to leave until June, but I will stay onboard until my replacement is fully up to speed. I want to allow plenty of time to make sure that the transition is very smooth. If you know anyone who might be interested, please refer them to the job description.

I am very confident in the strength of our staff, and know that the growth of our programs will continue. Our fiscal situation is steadily improving. The fundraiser in June will help build a strong financial base that will continue into 2009 and beyond.

I have enjoyed my time here. I wish all of you fair winds and following seas.

Ted

General: Another Successful Year of Summer Youth Sailing

Posted by Alex on 2008-01-04 12:12:16 CST

The summer season is coming to an end and after one of our best years yet, so is the summer youth program. Our enrollment has grown in all of our programs this year and with a 56% increase in size, the youth program was no exception.

With many new sailors, Piers Park Sailing Center hosted the annual Youth Invitational Regatta. Piers Park, Winthrop Yacht Club, and Community Boating took the top three spots. The regatta was, as always, fun and exciting for all of the students.

The season came to a close with take your parents sailing day; more than 40 families joined their children on Boston Harbor to see all of the skills their young sailors had acquired over the course of the summer.

General: Adaptive Sailing Coordinator On-Board

Posted by Alex on 2007-06-14 08:18:01 CDT

Maureen McKinnon-Tucker has joined us to coordinate our Adaptive Program. As a disabled sailor and racer herself, she brings a wealth of knowledge and understanding about adaptive sailing from around the country and the world. Since 2001, Maureen has been actively competing on the disabled racing circuit and is now a Paralympic candidate for the Beijing China Paralympics in 2008. Maureen strongly believes that sailing is a sport anyone can enjoy regardless of cognitive or physical limits. In her words:

“Sailing is the great equalizer. With the right adaptive equipment and training, I hope not just to take people with disabilities for a boat ride, but to empower them to fully participate in and enjoy the sport of sailing for a lifetime.

On a daily basis, people with a disability bump up against limits, some small, others seemingly insurmountable. Sailing can open up possibilities of what the body and mind can do. I encourage you, if you have a disability or know someone with a disability to...... COME SAIL WITH US!!"

Maureen can be reached at (617) 561-6677. Her email is adaptive@piersparksailing.org.

General: Mast-Stepping day is a big success

Posted by Alex on 2007-04-17 02:00:27 CDT

Our 2007 mast-stepping day, April 14, was a major success! At least 25 volunteers turned out to help step masts aboard seven boats. At the end of four hours of hard work, we had seven boats ready to sail off the dock! Thank you to everyone that came down to help out!
